DStv Error Codes E16, E30 and E48: Quick Fixes at Home

E16, E30 and E48 are the codes people see most. Here's what each means and the quick fix to try at home before you call anyone.

Nothing spoils a quiet evening like a code popping up just as the news starts. The good news is that the three DStv error codes people search for most, E16, E30 and E48, can often be cleared at home in a few minutes. Here's what each one is telling you, the quick fix to try first, and the point where it's time to stop and call us.

Quick answer

For most DStv error codes, start with the account and the power. E16 usually clears once you confirm the account is paid and use Fix error in MyDStv. Plain E30 normally sorts itself out within about five minutes. E48 means no signal, so check the weather and the cable plugs, then restart the decoder at the wall.

First, read the code on your screen properly

Every code has a letter, a number and sometimes a second number after a dash. E48 and E48-32 are close cousins, but E16-4 and E30-2 send you down very different roads. Write the full code down, including the bit after the dash.

Then note whether it's on one channel or all of them, and whether it started after a storm or a debit order date. DStv also keeps a full list of error codes on its help pages if you see one we don't cover here.

E16 fixes: when DStv error codes point to your account

DStv describes E16 as "service is currently scrambled". In plain words, the decoder isn't being allowed to show that channel. It's usually an account matter, not a broken box.

  1. Open the MyDStv app, or sign in on dstv.com, and check the account is paid up and the package is active.
  2. Check the channel is part of your package. After the September 2026 changes, some channels moved, so read up on the DStv price changes for 2026 if you're unsure.
  3. Use the Fix error option in MyDStv, or DStv's WhatsApp self-service, and leave the decoder switched on and tuned to a DStv channel.
  4. Give it up to 15 minutes. DStv says that's how long the code can take to clear.

One channel only? That's almost always a package question.

E30 and E30-2: the codes that usually clear themselves

Plain E30 means the decoder is checking your subscription status. DStv says it should go away by itself within about five minutes. If it hangs around longer, the online Fix error tool is your next step.

E30-2 is a different animal. It's a short drop in signal, and here it tends to arrive with heavy weather. When a squall is pushing rain across False Bay, a brief E30-2 is normal and should lift once the cloud moves on.

If E30-2 keeps coming back on calm, clear days, the dish has less margin than it should. That often points to a small shift in aim, which our team fixes with dish realignment and LNB replacement.

E48 and E48-32: work through the signal path

E48 means "searching for signal". E48-32 is the version most homes see, and DStv lists weather as the usual cause. Under a clear sky, look between the dish and the decoder.

  • Look outside. Heavy rain or thick low cloud? Wait for it to pass before you touch anything.
  • Check the dish cable is pushed firmly into the right input at the back of the decoder.
  • Switch the decoder off at the wall plug, count to at least ten, then switch it on again.

For a closer look at this one, our guide on diagnosing an E48-32 error walks through the clues in more detail.

Safety first

Every check in this guide happens indoors, at the decoder. Don't climb onto the roof or up a ladder to inspect the dish, and never fiddle with the LNB or its wiring. Roofs here are steep and the wind can gust hard without warning.

Why Simon's Town homes see these DStv error codes

In Simon's Town, salt air off the bay works its way into connectors and brackets, and a corroded connector can cause an E48-32 that comes and goes. Our notes on salt air dish maintenance explain what to look for from the ground.

Homes stacked up the slopes above Glencairn and Da Gama Park also live with the mountain. The DStv satellite sits roughly north-east of us, and a new tree or extension in that direction can shave off just enough signal to cause trouble. Read about signal shadows and line of sight if your problems began after something changed next door.

Then there's the summer south-easter. On heritage cottages along St George's Street, dishes often sit on chimneys that were never built for that load, and a tiny nudge is enough.

Signs your DStv fault codes need a technician

Home fixes have their limits. These DStv fault codes and patterns tell us the problem is outside the lounge:

  • E48-32 on every channel in dry, calm weather, after you've checked the cables and restarted.
  • E30-2 showing several times a week with no storm in sight.
  • Visible rust, a cracked cable or a dish that looks tilted when you stand in the garden.

Running a holiday flat or guesthouse near Boulders or Miller's Point? Don't wait for guests to report it. Our DStv decoder repairs service tests the signal on a meter, checks every connector and shows you the readings before we leave.

Technician tip

Photograph the error on screen and the cable at the back of the decoder before you call. It helps us bring the right parts.

Stopping DStv problem codes from coming back

Most DStv problem codes repeat because the cause never gets fixed. Pay a few days before the debit date, and have the dish checked after a rough winter.

If you're wondering how to clear DStv error code messages in a home that stands empty for months, ask a neighbour to switch the decoder on a day before you arrive. That gives it time to pick up your subscription, so you aren't stuck on E16 with the family already on the couch.

DStv error codes: FAQs

How do I clear DStv error codes myself?

Start with the account. Check it's paid and the package is active in the MyDStv app, then use Fix error and leave the decoder on a DStv channel. For signal codes, check the cable plugs and restart the decoder at the wall.

What does DStv error code E16-4 mean?

E16-4 means the decoder isn't authorised to show that channel, so the service isn't active on it. Make sure the account is paid and the channel is in your package, then re-authorise through the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service or Fix errors on dstv.com.

Why does my DStv say no signal in Simon's Town?

Heavy rain is the most common short-term cause. If the weather is fine, look for a loose cable at the decoder, a dish knocked off line by the south-easter, salt damage on a connector or something new blocking the dish's view to the north-east.

What is DStv error E30?

Plain E30 shows while the decoder checks your subscription status. DStv says it normally clears by itself within about five minutes. If it stays longer, use the online Fix error tool. E30-2 is a different code that points to a short loss of signal.

How do I fix DStv error codes after payment?

Make sure the full balance was paid, not just the monthly amount. Leave the decoder on and tuned to a DStv channel, then use Fix error in MyDStv or on dstv.com. Allow up to 15 minutes before trying again.
