1. Who we are
This privacy policy explains how DSTV Installations Simon's Town ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares and protects your personal information. We provide MultiChoice accredited DStv installation, repair and maintenance services in Simon's Town and across the False Bay coast, and we operate this website at dstvinstallationsimonstown.co.za.
We process personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). For the purposes of POPIA we are the responsible party in respect of the personal information described in this policy.
You can reach us at 079 754 5527 or info@dstvinstallationsimonstown.co.za. Our operating area is Simon's Town, Cape Town, False Bay Coast, 7995.
2. What personal information we collect
We only collect information we need in order to quote for work, carry it out, and support it afterwards.
Information you give us
- Contact details — your name, telephone or WhatsApp number, and email address.
- Location details — the suburb and physical address of the property where work is to be carried out, and access instructions where you provide them.
- Job details — the service you are asking about, a description of the fault or requirement, the equipment on site, and any photographs or error codes you send us.
- Correspondence — the content of enquiries, quote requests, WhatsApp messages, emails and telephone conversations relating to your job.
- Billing details — the name and address for invoicing, and a record of payments received. We do not collect or store card numbers on this website.
Information we generate
- Job records — quotes, invoices, the work performed, parts fitted, signal readings taken, and warranty details.
- Installation photographs — images of the dish position, cabling and equipment, taken for technical and warranty purposes. We do not publish photographs that identify a property or a person without the owner's consent.
Information collected automatically
- Website usage — standard server log information such as IP address, browser type, pages viewed and referring page, generated by the hosting provider for security and performance purposes.
The quote form on our contact page opens a message in your own email application. Its contents reach us only when you choose to send it.
3. Why we collect it and our lawful basis
Under POPIA, personal information must be processed for a specific, explicitly defined and lawful purpose. Ours are:
- To respond to your enquiry and prepare a quote. Basis: your request, and steps taken at your request before entering into a contract.
- To carry out the work you have booked, including scheduling, site access and completion. Basis: performance of our contract with you.
- To invoice you and keep accounting records. Basis: performance of our contract and compliance with South African tax law.
- To honour warranties and provide after-sales support. Basis: performance of our contract and our legitimate interest in supporting our own workmanship.
- To arrange your DStv subscription or equipment with MultiChoice where you ask us to. Basis: your consent and your instruction.
- To maintain the security and integrity of this website. Basis: our legitimate interest.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for direct marketing unless you have asked to hear from us, and where you have, you may opt out at any time by replying to any message or contacting us on the details below.
4. Who we share it with
We share personal information only where it is necessary, and only with:
- Our technicians and subcontracted installers, who receive the name, contact number, address and job details needed to attend a job. They are required to keep that information confidential and to use it only for the job.
- MultiChoice and its authorised agents, where you have asked us to arrange, activate, link or amend a DStv subscription or piece of equipment on your behalf. MultiChoice processes your information under its own privacy terms.
- Suppliers of equipment, where a warranty claim or return requires a job reference.
- Our accountants, bookkeepers and payment providers, for invoicing and statutory record-keeping.
- Our website and email hosting providers, who store data on our behalf under contract.
- Insurers, attorneys, courts or regulators, where we are legally required to disclose information or where it is necessary to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim.
Some service providers, such as email and hosting platforms, may store information on servers outside South Africa. Where that happens we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that the recipient is subject to laws or binding agreements providing an adequate level of protection, as required by section 72 of POPIA.
5. How long we keep it
- Enquiries that do not become jobs — up to 12 months, then deleted.
- Job records, quotes and invoices — at least 5 years, in line with South African tax and company record-keeping requirements.
- Warranty records — for the duration of the warranty and a reasonable period afterwards, so that claims can be assessed.
- Website server logs — for the period set by our hosting provider, typically a matter of months.
When information is no longer needed for the purpose it was collected for, and we are not required to keep it, we delete or de-identify it.
6. How we protect it
We take appropriate, reasonable technical and organisational measures to prevent loss of, damage to, or unauthorised access to personal information in our possession, as required by section 19 of POPIA. In practice that means access limited to the people who need it, password-protected devices and accounts, encrypted transmission of this website's traffic, and secure disposal of paper records.
No system is completely secure. If a security compromise affects your personal information we will notify you and the Information Regulator as soon as reasonably possible after becoming aware of it, in line with section 22 of POPIA.
7. Your rights under POPIA
As a data subject you have the right to:
- Ask whether we hold personal information about you, and request a copy of it.
- Request that we correct or delete information that is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or obtained unlawfully.
- Object, on reasonable grounds, to our processing of your personal information.
- Withdraw consent where our processing is based on consent, without affecting processing already carried out.
- Object at any time to the use of your information for direct marketing.
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
- Not be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing. We do not make such decisions.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in section 12. We may ask you to verify your identity before acting on a request. We will respond within a reasonable period, and there is no charge for a request unless it is excessive or repetitive, in which case we will tell you the fee before proceeding.
8. Cookies and this website
This website is a static site. It does not set advertising or tracking cookies, and it does not run third-party analytics or advertising scripts. It loads a web font from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google's servers when a page loads; that request is subject to Google's own privacy terms. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs for security and performance purposes.
Your browser may store small amounts of information locally to remember interface preferences. You can clear this at any time through your browser settings.
9. Children's information
Our services are directed at property owners and occupiers, and we do not knowingly collect personal information about children. Where information relating to a child is necessary — for example a name on an account — we rely on the consent of a competent person as required by POPIA. If you believe we hold information about a child that should not be there, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Complaints and the Information Regulator
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please raise it with us first — most issues are resolved quickly and directly. If you are not satisfied with our response, you are entitled to complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa, which is the supervisory authority for POPIA. Current contact details for the Regulator are published on its official website.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our services, systems or legal obligations change. The current version always appears on this page with the date it was last updated at the top. Material changes affecting how we use information you have already given us will be communicated to you directly where it is reasonable to do so.
