Salt Air and Satellite Dishes: Why Coastal Installations in Simon's Town Fail Early

Salt does not attack a dish the way a storm does. It works slowly, from the inside of the connectors outwards, and by the time the picture breaks up the damage has usually been going on for two winters.

What salt air actually does to an installation

Simon's Town sits directly on False Bay, and for most of the year the air carries a fine marine aerosol — microscopic droplets of seawater lifted off the surf and pushed inland by the wind. It settles invisibly on every outdoor surface. When the temperature drops overnight and dew forms, that salt dissolves into a thin, highly conductive film of brine. Metal that would sit happily for a decade in Durbanville starts to corrode within a couple of seasons here.

Two things then happen at once. Steel components rust, which is the visible problem. And dissimilar metals in contact — a steel bolt against an aluminium bracket, a brass connector against a plated dish arm — form a small electrical cell in that brine film and corrode each other. That is galvanic corrosion, and it is the reason a dish can look perfectly clean from the ground while the fitting behind it is quietly failing.

The four parts that fail first

The F-connectors. These are the small screw-on fittings at each end of the coaxial cable. They are the single most common failure point on the coast. Salt-laden moisture wicks into the joint, oxidises the centre pin, and raises resistance until the signal reaching the decoder collapses. A connector that has gone green or chalky is already costing you signal even if the picture still looks fine.

The LNB. The small unit on the arm in front of the dish converts the satellite signal down to a frequency the cable can carry. Its plastic housing and rubber weather boot are the only things between the electronics and the sea air. Inland, an LNB can run for a decade. On the exposed False Bay coast we typically see three to five years, and less on properties in Seaforth, Boulders or the seafront side of the historic mile.

The bracket and fixings. Wall brackets, U-bolts, pole clamps and the masonry anchors behind them all rust. A rust streak running down the wall below the bracket is a genuine warning: it means the fixing is losing section, and the next serious north-wester will move the dish whether you like it or not.

The cable sheath. UV and salt embrittle the outer jacket of RG6 coaxial cable, particularly on north- and west-facing runs. Once the sheath cracks, moisture travels along the braid and into the cable itself. At that point patching the ends no longer helps and the run has to be replaced.

A quick self-check: stand under your dish and look at the bracket, then at the LNB boot. Rust streaks on the wall, a cracked or perished rubber boot, or green powder around a connector all mean the installation needs attention before the next winter, not after it.

How far from the water counts as "coastal"?

Further than most people assume. The heaviest exposure is within about 500 metres of the surf line, which in Simon's Town covers Seaforth, Boulders, the historic mile, the harbour edge and the lower parts of Glencairn and Fish Hoek. But the south-easter carries salt a long way up the slopes, so Murdock Valley, Da Gama Park, Welcome Glen and Red Hill are all meaningfully more corrosive than a suburb ten kilometres inland. Properties high on the mountainside often get the worst of both worlds — salt air plus far more wind loading on the dish.

Wind direction matters too. A dish tucked under an eave on the sheltered side of a house will outlast an identical dish on an exposed gable by years. Where we have a choice of mounting position, that is part of what we are weighing up.

A maintenance rhythm that works here

You do not need to do much, but you do need to do it on a schedule rather than in reaction to a failure. What we recommend for coastal properties:

  • Once a year, before winter. A check of bracket tension, connector condition, LNB health, cable sheath and signal levels across several transponders. Autumn is the right time — you want problems found before the first big north-wester, not during it.
  • After any severe storm. Not a full service, but a look at the dish and a signal reading. Movement of a few millimetres at the bracket is enough to cost you a large share of your margin.
  • Rinse, do not scrub. If your dish is reachable and you want to help it along, a gentle freshwater rinse of the dish face and arm removes accumulated salt. Do not use solvents, do not pull on the cable, and do not attempt to open the LNB.
  • Replace, do not nurse, a failing LNB. Once an LNB starts dropping signal in damp weather it will not recover. Replacing it is inexpensive compared with the callouts it generates.

What we specify differently on the coast

Coastal installation is not the same job as inland installation, and the difference is almost entirely in the parts list. We use quality RG6 coaxial cable with a well-rated outer jacket, weatherproof compression F-connectors rather than cheap crimp fittings, self-amalgamating tape and sealant on every external joint, corrosion-resistant mounting hardware, and LNBs with intact weather boots properly seated. Cable entries into the building are sealed and dressed so water runs away from the penetration rather than into it.

None of that is exotic. It is simply the specification the environment demands, and it is the main reason a properly built coastal installation lasts while a cheap one needs a callout every winter.

When to call us

Book a dish realignment and maintenance visit if you have visible rust at the bracket, a perished LNB boot, corroded connectors, or a signal reading that has been sliding over months. If you are already getting error codes such as E48-32 in bad weather, the corrosion has reached the point where it is affecting reception and a callout is the faster route.

Callouts start from R550 and include diagnosis, signal testing and minor work such as realignment or connector replacement. Parts are quoted on-site before anything is fitted. For holiday homes and guesthouses where nobody is on the property to notice a slow decline, an annual maintenance plan is usually the cheaper option over time.
